Everyone in the food sector, from hawkers to home vendors to large food chains, must register with FSSAI. You need to register with FSSAI whether you operate online or offline, whether you are a local player or involved in the import/export of food items.

If your company comes into any of the following categories, you must get a food licence:

  • Procurement
  • Manufacture
  • Distribution
  • Processing
  • Packaging
  • Storage

In other words, everybody who works with food ingredients from farm to plate must have an FSSAI food licence.

A food business operator (FBO) who operates their business without registering with FSSAI may face imprisonment and a fine of up to 5 lakhs.

FSSAI permits for food establishments are valid for 1 to 5 years.

It is required to apply for licence renewal 30 days before the current licence expires. Failure to renew a licence can result in a punishment of ₹100 each day until the renewal is completed.

In accordance with the FSSAI Act, of 2006, food businesses fall into three categories for registration/licensing:

  1. Food Licence Registration Online – Basic

It is the most widely used type of registration given for small firms with annual revenues of up to 12 lakhs. Catering businesses, regardless of their size.

  1. FSSAI State Licence

Companies with a profit of over 12 lakhs are required to obtain a state licence.

  1. FSSAI Central Licence

The central registration is for larger enterprises with yearly revenue of more than 20 crores.

Companies that provide food to government offices/departments, along with enterprises involved in food import/export, an online platform, operating franchises, or hotel/restaurant chains, must get a central licence.
